Environment Agency has launched an investigation into a \u2018sickening\u2019 30,000 illegal waste dump on a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Leicestershire.<\/h4>\n<p>The investigation was launched after public reports of odours coming from the site at Cave\u2019s Inn Pits.<\/p>\n<p>Officers from the Environment Agency and Natural England visited the area and found approximately 30,000 tonnes of shredded waste in layers buried beneath soil in an attempt to conceal the site.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the criminal investigation, the Environment Agency says it is assessing the waste to ensure there are no further environmental impacts,\u00a0as well as monitoring local air and water quality.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is a sickening case of large-scale illegal waste dumping, and\u202fwe share the public\u2019s disgust.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Commenting on the investigation, Ian Jones, Area Director, West Midlands at the Environment Agency, said: \u201cThis is a sickening case of large-scale illegal waste\u00a0dumping,\u00a0and\u202fwe share the public\u2019s disgust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have launched an investigation with Natural England to\u202ffind the criminals and ensure they pay the price for their despicable actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask the public to stay away from the area, which is on private land, while we investigate.\u00a0Anyone with information about this incident should please call our 24-hour hotline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phil Hukin, Principal Manager,\u00a0Leicestershire\u00a0and Rutland at Natural England, the government\u2019s adviser for the natural environment in England, said the site\u00a0contained\u00a0some of the \u2018best remaining areas of neutral marsh\u2019 in Leicestershire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is heartbreaking to see one of England\u2019s precious sites of special scientific interest damaged like this,\u201d Hukin said.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a
